Industrial inverter, is a power electronic device or circuitry that changes direct current (DC) to lternating current (AC).
The input voltage, output voltage and frequency, and overall power handling depend on the design of the specific device or circuitry. The inverter does not produce any power; the power is provided by the DC source.
A power inverter can be entirely electronic or may be a combination of mechanical effects (such as a rotary apparatus) and electronic circuitry. Industrial Static inverters do not use moving parts in the conversion process.
Power inverters are primarily used in electrical power applications where high currents and voltages are present; circuits that perform the same function for electronic signals, which usually have very low currents and voltages, are called oscillators. Circuits that perform the opposite function, converting AC to DC, are called rectifiers.
Inverters find their applications in both industrial and commercial installations.
Inverters are a very important key component in solar power plants. Since solar power plants generate DC but the grid requires AC, the inverter helps in converting the DC to AC.
In some cases, large power grids have DC supply, which is again converted to AC supply using inverters.
Inverters are also used in hybrid cars and Electric vehicles to convert the DC supply from batteries into AC supply for the AC motors.
Inverters are used in battery rooms of Astronomical and Military installations and also submarines and ships, where the DC battery power will be converted to AC power.
In railway applications, the DC supply from the 110 volt batteries is converted to 750 volts AC to run air conditioners.
In diesel electric locomotives, where the supply of the AC generator fluctuates dangerously and uncontrollably, the supply is converted to DC power using a full bridge rectifier and regulated, after which the regulated DC output is reconverted back to AC power to power the traction motors of the locomotive.
